First, cattle and sheep are ruminants

Cattle and sheep are ruminants and have four stomachs: the rumen, reticulum, valve-stomach, and real stomach. The first three stomachs are called the foregut. There are a large number of bacteria and protozoa in the forefoot, especially the rumen, which can digest and decompose the crude fiber in the feed. The digestion of the feed in the fore-stomach of cattle and sheep is mainly done by them. A large amount of fine material (grain), especially paste feed, is extremely unfavorable to the growth, reproduction and activity of bacteria and protozoa in the stomach. The long-term use of grain as the main feed will adversely affect digestive function.

Second, cattle and sheep have the characteristics of rumination

Cattle and sheep have the characteristics of rumination, they can spit the grass that they eat back into the mouth and swallow it after chewing. Feeding too much food often stops the rumination of cattle and sheep. Therefore, in order to ensure the normal digestive function of cattle and sheep, it is necessary to feed large amounts of crop straw, grass and hay.

Third, cattle and sheep have a large stomach

The cattle and sheep stomachs have a large volume and only feed small-sized foods, and cattle and sheep have a sense of hunger. This phenomenon does not occur when feeding forages containing more crude fiber.

Of course, grain should be fed as a concentrate, but it should not be used as a "staple food" for cattle and sheep. In addition to feeding more dairy cows and dairy goats, they should mainly feed roughage containing more fiber.
