Canada launches new solar toothbrush without toothpaste

Release date: 2010-09-03

Canadian researchers have developed a new type of toothbrush that does not require toothpaste and uses a solar energy to form a chemical reaction in the mouth to clean the teeth.
Dr. Komiya Bunxiong, a retired dental professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, designed the first model of this unconventional toothbrush 15 years ago. Now, Komiya Bunxiong and his colleague Dr. Gerry Uswako are recruiting volunteers to test their new toothbrush, the Soladey-J3X. The toothbrush was produced by the Japanese company, and soon they will test 120 teenagers to detect the difference between it and the ordinary toothbrush.
The Soladey-J3X consists of a solar cell and a pedestal that transmits electrons to the front of the toothbrush through a wire. The electrons form a chemical reaction with the acid in the mouth to remove tartar and kill the bacteria. This new type of toothbrush does not require toothpaste, as long as it has the same amount of light as the solar calculator. Researchers have tested the toothbrush for a periodontal disease-causing flora and proved that the toothbrush can cause "bacterial cells to die completely."
Last month, researchers announced their findings at the World Dental Alliance Global Dentist Annual Conference in Dubai and stood out from the 170 inventions.
