Mushroom Fluorescent Whitening Substances From Package Pollution

The Beijing Food Safety Office announced on the 1st the recent special monitoring results of fluorescent whitening substances for mushroom products in the Beijing market. Fluorescent whitening substances were detected on the surface of the three samples, and the sampling pass rate was 97.73%. According to expert analysis, the fluorescent whitening substance on the mushroom surface comes from the packaging contamination.

Earlier media reports said that a survey of elementary school students in Beijing found that fresh mushrooms on the market are now contaminated with fluorescent whitening agents. Eating such mushrooms for a long period of time will cause multiple hazards to the human body. To this end, the Beijing Food Safety Office has recently organized relevant departments to conduct special monitoring of the fluorescent whitening substances of mushroom products sold on the Beijing market.

In this special monitoring, 132 samples were collected from 13 supermarkets and markets in Dongcheng, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Tongzhou and Changping Districts. Sample sites include Fairview, Xinfadi, Yuegezhuang, Baliqiao, Dayang, Shuitun and other wholesale markets, and Shoulian, Jingkelong, Wumart, Midea, Supermarket, Carrefour, Lotte and other shopping malls and supermarkets. Among them, there are 46 samples of fresh edible fungi, 74 samples of dried edible fungi, and 12 samples of edible fungus cans. Types include shiitake mushrooms, slipper mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, tea mushroom, coprinus comatus, oyster mushroom, mushroom, black fungus, crab mushroom, straw mushroom, king oyster mushroom, white mushroom, flower mushroom, pearl mushroom, white mushroom, mushroom ( Mushroom), Xiu Zhen mushroom, hazel mushroom, fresh mushroom, autumn fungus, Hericium erinaceus, abalone mushroom, yellow boletus, alpine cephalobia, delicious boletus, money mushroom, hazel mushroom, day lily.

According to “Test of Fluorescent Substances in Edible Fungi” (NY/T 1257-2006), “List of Non-edible Substances that May Be Illegal in Food Additives” issued by the national government to crack down on the illegal addition of non-edible substances and abuse of food additives (fourth batch) , Beijing food safety regulatory authorities conducted tests on 132 edible fungus samples. The results showed that three samples detected fluorescent whitening substances, and none of the other samples was detected, and the qualification rate was 97.73%. From the detection situation, the three unqualified samples were all stained with fluorescent brightening substances on the surface, and they were not detected inside the cells, and fluorescent substances were detected on the packages wrapped in mushrooms. According to expert analysis, fluorescent whitening substances on the surface of mushroom products come from packaging contamination.

The three mushroom products contaminated with fluorescent brightening substances on the surface are: No. 7 Fungi Hall, Agricultural and Sideline Products Wholesale Market, Xinfadi, Fengtai District, Beijing, and Coprinus comatus sold by Li Yu Fungus Sales Center, Beijing Xinfadi; Beijing Changping District No. 1309, West Building, Shuitun Wholesale Market, Shuitun Village, Shuicheng Village, Buicheng District, bulk Bailing Mushroom sold by the Beijing Rongsheng Xiangrui Edible Fungi Sales Department, bulk Bai Ling sold by Beijing Dayang Road Agricultural Products Market, vegetable wholesale zone No. 64 mushroom.

According to the Beijing Municipal Office of Food Safety, since 2009, the Beijing Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce has conducted a total of 321 samples of edible fungi on the Beijing market for the detection of fluorescent whitening substances, and three samples have detected fluorescent whitening substances. The overall pass rate is 99.07%.

The person in charge of the Beijing Municipal Food Safety Office stated that the operator who detected the unqualified edible fungi sample for this monitoring has instructed the industry and commerce department to carry out the delisting and registration of the same batch of products in accordance with relevant procedures. At the same time, the city's food safety regulatory agencies will seriously perform their duties, strengthen food supervision and monitoring, and welcome the participation of all sectors of the community.
