East China Normal University develops new technology - Sludge becomes organic fertilizer

In the past, sludge was landfilled in China. Now, with invisible microorganisms, sludge can be converted into organic fertilizers or biological pesticides with higher added value to realize the recycling of sludge. A few days ago, this new technology was successfully developed by the task force chaired by Chen Liqiao, Gao Hongliang, and Chang Zhongyi of the Life Science Academy of East China Normal University. The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Science and Technology Consulting Center check new, expert identification, the technology has reached the same level of research abroad. With the acceleration of urbanization in China, the amount of municipal sewage sludge has increased dramatically. According to statistics, China's urban sewage plant discharges 9 million tons of sludge each year, and grows at a rate of 10% per year. How to treat sludge effectively and safely has become a “hurdle” that must be overcome in the modernization and development of cities in China. From October 2002 to October 2004, after repeated trials, the research group mastered the key technology of urban sludge treatment—closed microbial aerobic fermentation, obtained a microbial agent suitable for sludge treatment, and achieved sludge treatment. Reducing, stabilizing, detoxifying, and recycling have provided practical methods for sludge treatment that has plagued large and medium-sized cities such as Shanghai, and are in line with the need to build an ecologically sustainable city and the country to develop a circular economy. It is understood that there are three types of sludge treatment methods at present: incineration, landfill and resource utilization. Incineration technology is widely used in foreign countries, but the investment is huge, and it is easy to cause air pollution. Many landfills are used in China, but it takes a lot of land and causes secondary pollution to the environment. There are few land reclamation resources in large and medium cities such as Shanghai. Use this method for a long time. In contrast, the new technology developed by Chen Liqiao and others converts sludge into high-quality agricultural resources, which is best suited to China's national conditions. Chen Liqiao said that the treatment of sludge with microorganisms has broad prospects. After field test and practical application of the sewage treatment plant, it can obtain economic benefits of about 150 yuan per one ton of sludge. Currently, Shanghai Municipality emits about 1.4 million tons of sludge each year. If 20% of the sludge is treated with microbial aerobic fermentation, the direct economic benefit is about 42 million yuan. In addition, the use of microbial aerobic fermentation, can also eliminate the odor of sludge, effectively control the secondary pollution of sludge, environmental benefits are also significant. At present, the research results of this project have applied for two national invention patents, and will be the first trial in Shanghai's water purification plant.
